Cub Scout Pack 171

About Us

Pack 171 provides a full scouting program to boys in the Grimes Iowa community. We have been in existance for over 50 years and we have a membership of approximately 80 boys and 13 adult leaders, making us one of the largest and oldest Packs in the state of Iowa. Our Charter Organization is the Grimes United Methodist Church where all pack meetings and most den meetings are also held.

Pack 171 is joined in the scouting tradition with having the distinct pleasure of working with two Troops of Boy Scouts (boys grades 5 -12). Troop 171 and Troop 111 represent Grimes with a large number of boys, many of whom have achieved the ultimate distinction of Eagle Scout rank.

Webelos – Completed third grade or 9 years old

Our program year runs from August through June but there are many Scouting activities for boys in July too!
Here are some of the activities we do:

  • Camping – Our pack loves to camp and we have family campouts 2-4 times per year.
  • Pinewood Derby – Build and race your own car!
  • Rain Gutter Regatta – Build and race your own boat!
  • Nature hikes and field trips depending on your den – you might visit a fire station, police station, or a museum!
  • Service Projects
  • Senior Home Visits
  • And of course, fun den meetings and pack meetings every month

So why should you join Pack 171? To have FUN of course! You’ll also get to learn and do cool things throughout the year. Maybe you’ll go to camp and learn how to use a map and compass or go on a nature hike and learn about the local animals and plants. There’s lots to do! For you parents, you might be wondering why your son should become a Cub Scout… well, the Purposes of Cub Scouting say it best:

Volunteers are the backbone of the Scouting community. We have an extremely active and well run Cub Scout Pack and this is because of the family members who volunteer their time and talents to help keep Scouting strong in our community. We encourage all family members of Pack 171 Scouts to fill out our quick “Time and Talents” survey or if you want, you can sign up for a committee spot by going to the Pack Committee Sign-Up Page. Any help is always appreciated and without volunteers, there would be no Cub Scouts.

Boy Scout Troops 111 and 171

Boy Scouting is an exciting program for youth and adults who want to share in the development of young people.

For over 50 years, Troops 111 and 171 have provided that educational program for our boys and young adults. The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to serve others by helping to instill values in our young people and, in other ways, to prepare them to make ethical choices during their lifetime in achieving their full potential. Our purpose is to build character, to train in the responsibilities of citizenship and to develop personal fitness.
