Philmont - Gear review and Crew Gear
7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
All, We need to spend some time reviewing your packs and gear. As this weekend we are going to do our first shakedown campout. This Friday we will be starting from the Youth campsite hiking about 4 miles only to return to the youth camp site. Setup camp maybe have a snack. Sautday morning we will be getting up, eating breakfast and hiking for another 4 miles. We are not going to do a ton of miles this weekend. I would rather focus on gear and setting up camp.

Put up flag poles at Cemetry.
7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Sunny Hill Cemetery’s address: 420 SE 6th St, Grimes, IA 50111 Participation: Of course this is a great event to participate in, one of our most public facing events of the year, but not expected to be at every single event. Come as you can. Monday 10AM is the highlight of the weekend. Background: In 2007, a Troop 171 Scout, Brandon Willemsen, completed an Eagle Project to line the road inside the cemetery at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes with flags for memorial day. Luke Herbsleb, Troop 171, added flag poles on the south-side in May 2019 for his Eagle Scout project. When the cemetery expanded, there were no flags that extended to the south side of the road. Mr. Herbsleb added the flag poles so that the gateway continued to the start of the new part of the cemetery. Luke’s father Mark was the Scoutmaster prior to Mr. Terry Huss, who was prior to Mr. Ely Lambert. There are a lot of flags, probably 75+. The community is very appreciative, we had several people stop by and thank us for doing these flags. We put flags up in the morning and take them down at night. American flags are to be taken down at night unless they are properly lighted. Flag Handling: The American Legion website has a handy guide on “United States Flag Code”. I’d encourage folks to become familiar with it so we are fully respectful to the flag and everything it represents. Important details such as never letting the flag touch the ground are covered. https://www.legion.org/flag/code These two scouts made a nice video with helpful flag info. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i0mQSDI9Rs Cemetery parking: Street parking isn’t that great, and no designated parking inside the cemetery. So out of respect for the cemetery and the neighborhood, we typically park in a lot at the corner of SE 6th St & SE Main Street. It is maybe a 100 yard walk to the cemetery entrance from this parking lot, not a big deal. We meet at the middle entrance on the north side of the cemetery. Parking lot address best I can tell is 501 SE Main St, Grimes, IA 50111 City Storage Building Parking: City of Grimes storage building where the flag poles are stored is located at 901 NE main st. It is the next property south of Finish Line Body & Paint with a purple roof. This is the lot where the cardboard recycling dumpsters are located. Typically it works well to park on the north side of the parking lot of Golden Rule Plumbing & Heating and walk across the street to the city storage building. We need to be able to maneuver a truck or truck/trailer to load/unload the flag poles. Thursday Night: The flag poles are stored in a city building, there are typically snow plows stored in this shed. We first meet at the city storage building to get the 20 ft long poles (metal electrical conduit) out of this building and load them in a truck or trailer. Once loaded, we all head over to the cemetery to stand them up in existing holes. The pavement is marked with a white line to help locate the holes. We just put the poles up, no flags. Casual clothing, light duty gloves might be a good idea. Here are some photos from last year. https://www.facebook.com/groups/GrimesTroop171/posts/10160307786799182/ Plan for 90 minutes, depending on how many folks help out. Saturday: Put flags up @ 7 AM and take them down @ 7 PM. Casual clothing. Depending on how many folks show up, ~30 minutes each time. Sunday: Put flags up @ 7 AM and take them down @ 7 PM. Casual clothing. Depending on how many folks show up, ~30 minutes each time. Monday: Put flags up @ 7 AM at half staff, casual clothing. Come back and help the lions club with a short Memorial Day ceremony @ 10 AM. We are responsible for flags, the Lions club handles the rest. We typically get there around 9:15 ish, run through our part a few times and coordinate cues. DCG high school students typically serve as buglers playing taps. Full Class A uniforms, looking your best as we are in front of the general public. Great time to talk to the community members before and after the ceremony. Ceremony is short, maybe 20-30 minutes. Memorial day flags are flown at half staff until noon when they are put at full staff. Usually at the completion of the ceremony we put them to full staff. Take down flags and poles @ 7 PM. Put poles in a truck/trailer, head to the city shop to put them away. Casual clothing. Monday night the flags will be formally folded for storage. YouTube has a nice flag folding video. There will be a lot of flags to fold! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFtv7MGLC9Q

We will be camping at ledges state park. We have a small campsite as it was the only one left available. Please be ready with Gear and equipment. We will not be taking the trailer as we will not have the trailer at Philmont. Make sure that you have everything you need in your backpack. I will have the crew gear to pass out.
